Synopsis

Here are a few words about the wines selected for your tasting pleasures.

About Group 1: Red Wine of Burgundy

Fans of Pinot Noir wines tend to adore the red wines of Burgundy which in the most part is made exclusively from Pinot Noir. Notable exceptions include the fine red wines of Mâcon which can be a fine expression of Gamay and Bourgogne Passetoutgrains made from a blend of mostly Gamay and Pinot Noir. Although Pinot Noir wines are produced in many wine regions across the world, from New Zealand to Argentina, California to Oregon as well as Germany, most producers aspire to the Burgundian style.

Wine lovers often compare Burgundy to Bordeaux. The glaring difference here is that Bordeaux red wines are blends (of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and possibly a few other varieties) while Burgundy is straight Pinot Noir. Without the inherent flexibility that comes with blending, Burgundy wines tends to allow its terroir to come through more clearly. Moreover vintage characteristics tend to be more prominent with Burgundy. In Bordeaux, adjustments to the blend can, to a certain extent, cover flaws of one variety caused by adverse growing conditions of that year.

Those are gross generalizations of course. Comparisons can be illuminating but at the end of the day the appreciation of wines from great regions like Burgundy goes much deeper than that.

About Group 2: White Wine of Burgundy

The best Burgundy whites are generally made from 100% Chardonnay, with notable exceptions including one made from the Aligote variety. Chardonnay is grown in practically all major wine regions in the world with remarkable success in most. Chardonnay is one of the most neutral grape varieties, by itself giving very little in terms of distinctive flavors and aromas. However it is extremely versatile, often likened by winemakers to canvass for a painter.

Like its red sibling, the white wines of Burgundy are adored not only by wine lovers but also winemakers all over the world. Once again it seems that the expression of terroir seems to have mesmerized makers, drinkers and connoisseurs alike. Another quality that makes Burgundy whites stand out is purity of fruit, a virtue that sounds simple but is in fact a very challenging quality to achieve in Chardonnay wines.

About Group 3: Sparkling Wines of Burgundy

Champagne is part of the district of Burgundy. Along with Chablis which is also part of Burgundy, these two appellations have established an independent identity for its own. Champagne defends its identity with such fervent that practically all other sparkling wines, many made from exactly the same method and some from the same grape varieties also, have to form their own categories.

Crémant de Bourgogne is an appellation that covers all sparkling wines made from the traditional Champagne method using grapes grown within Burgundy. The governing laws and implementation of winemaking traditions are virtually the same as those in Champagne. But there are no luxury brands and large producers in the league of Moet, Veuve Cliquot, Bollinger and Heidseck in the Crémant domains. These are your down-to-earth Champagne-like French sparkling wines with qualities that are remarkably similar to those of Champagne.

About Group 4: Vintage red wine of Burgundy

The myriad expressions of terroir and vintage variations give rise to an equally wide spectrum of results after these fine red wines of Burgundy have been allowed to age and evolve inside the bottles for many years. For a long time and to a smaller extent it still persists, there is a feeling among wine drinkers, especially fans of Bordeaux wine that Burgundy reds do not age very well. In fact many wine producers in Burgundy profess the virtue of drinking their wines within 4 or 5 years after bottling. The fact remains that very few wine lovers ever get to sample enough matured vintage Burgundies to form an educated opinion on the issue. This also applies to winemakers in Burgundy who rarely get a chance to enjoy a bottle of 20-year-old Burgundy, if ever at all.

Certainly not all Burgundy red wines age beautifully. And there is some truth in the assertion that Bordeaux ages better than Burgundy, at least statistically speaking on the average. However for a given bottle at hand all older vintage wines represent a hit-or-miss possibility, something that wine connoisseurs have to contend with at this level of wine appreciation.

In matured vintage Burgundy connoisseurs look for qualities having to do with texture, depth and complexity of flavors. Any efforts to dissect and describe the wine in standardized terms will prove futile. The elegance in these wines often misleads people into concluding that the wine is weak, thin and feeble. Bright red fruit and berry flavors tend to give way to an amalgamation of many unobtrusive nuances that blend in with the texture, a quality that is rarely found in Bordeaux.

Group 5: Vintage white wine of Burgundy

Most wine drinkers automatically assume that white wines must be enjoyed as young and fresh as possible. There is nothing wrong with this approach except for those who have outgrown the forward charms of fresh fruits in their wines. Arguably an overwhelming percentage of white wines do not benefit at all from extended bottle-ageing at all. In fact many will dry out, become awkwardly out of balance with age. But there is this 2% to 3% that runs contrary to that rule. And a great majority of those 2-3% of age-worthy white wines can be found in Burgundy where the combination of old-style winemaking as well as terroirs that imbue long-living qualities into the Chardonnay wines enable the wine to evolve beautifully over a great span of time.

Many wine drinkers shy away from white wines of older vintages for several reasons, one of which is appearance. Contrary to red wines, white wine grows darker with age. 20-year-old white Burgundy can take on a rather deep golden color even though it started life in pale straw. Although the acidity in wine does not change with age, when fruit flavors start to subside the perception of acidity in wine becomes more prominent, thereby misleading us into thinking that older white wines taste tarter.

Matured white wines of Burgundy are rare. Not many collectors and certainly very few wine shops fancy laying them down for many years preferring to place their bets on red wines instead. This tends to mean that very few wine lovers get to enjoy fine matured vintage white wines of Burgundy also. For those who have sampled and then acquired a taste for them it is hard to make do without a regular treat of these great old vintage wines from time to time.

The Oakroom Restaurant of Oakwood Premier Hotel will provide guests with some delectable food accompaniments.

Enjoying the wine tasting event

Guests can arrive anytime during the event and enjoy the tasting at his/her own pace. Each ticket contains five tasting stubs. Each stub corresponds to a kind of wine. Just approach the wine service station and surrender a stub to redeem it for a tasting pour (roughly 55-60ml) of a wine in that group.

Experienced wine drinkers who have attended more than a few of these wine-tasting events often start with lighter wines and end with the ones that full-bodied. Having a sip of water in between tastings can help cleanse the palate to appreciate different set of flavors of the wines in the next glass.

Many participants also enjoy meeting new friends during these wine-tasting events. Some find it a great pleasure to talk to people with similar interests but different experience in wine. Interesting stories are exchanged and opinions are shared during the tasting.
