Up to now, one of the hardest questions in wine for me to answer is what is the best wine I’ve ever tasted. The best I could do was to spew out a parade of who’s who in wine, 34 Romanee Conti , 76 Cheval Blanc, 55 DRC Richebourg, 55 Latour, 69 Montrachet Leroy,… But all those heavyweights were cast aside by just one small sip of 1963 Quinta do Noval Nacional, an icon or a legend in Port wine. For some 20 years, I had looked at this bottle from the outside with sacrilegious cynicism, already decided that what’s inside was just a blend of hype and disappointment. How wrong was I. The 63 Quinta do Noval Nacional is without a doubt in my mind, the single greatest wine I have ever tasted in my life. I really can’t bring myself to drink more than 2 small glasses, preserving the rest to bring home to enjoy bit by bit with good old English Blue Stilton. I am going to savor these moments because there isn’t another one like it on the radar.
