Wine Seminar 16May28 2

The Seminar

The event starts off with a 80-minute discussion about the Burgundy’s major wine growing regions – the Côtes – namely Côte de Nuits, Côte de Beaune, Côte Chalonnaise and Mâconnais. Other well-known regions that are also technically part of the greater Burgundy department include the famous Chablis, Beaujolais and of course, Champagne.

The hierarchical classification of Burgundy wines will be discussed. This system might sound similar to the more familiar Bordeaux Grand Cru Classé classification but in fact it is fundamentally different. Burgundy does not rank Chateaux or producers. Instead it ranks wine growing sites, or vineyards, a philosophy that has far-reaching effects on the stylistic character of Burgundian wines, both red and white.

Discussion on the wine produced in Burgundy will start off with the main grape varieties planted here, principally Pinot Noir for red (Gamay for Beaujolais and Mâconnais) and Chardonnay for white. Without going into great details, the discussion will touch on certain characteristics of these varieties with respect to growing the grapes and the style of wine.

The lecture portion is only part of the event. The wine tasting segment of this event comes right after. Each participant will be given four wines to taste, namely:

Pinot-Noir-based Red wine
Gamay-based Red wine from Beaujolais or Mâconnais
Chardonnay-based White wine
15+-year-old Vintage Red wine from Burgundy

There will not be a lot of discussion during the tasting beyond the general introduction on the profile of the wines served. This is a time for participants to appreciate Burgundy wines while reflect on what was discussed earlier.

It is probably nothing new to Manila wine lovers who travel frequently abroad to attend wine events in Asia and other parts of the world. Here in the Philippines, wine tasting seminars are, unfortunately for some, almost always a sales promotional affair, designed to market a certain brand of wine.

For many wine lovers in the Philippines, it is much more rewarding to attend a wine seminar that does not have such an intense commercial flavor in it. For them it will come as good news that this wine tasting seminar in Manila will be a non-promotional event designed solely for the sharing of experience, knowledge and perspective of an interesting subject of wine – the intriguing wines of Burgundy.

Participants should note that the wine tasting seminars in Manila offered by YATS are not intended to help them pass tests or to obtain certifications. These wine tasting sessions are intended to stimulate interest and help wine lovers develop their own perspectives into the appreciation of wine.

The seminar is designed in such a way that participants would learn how to appreciate the wines of Burgundy through understanding the structure of the wines, the challenges and their defining style that producers all want to achieve.
