THREE Cabinet members whom President Benigno Aquino III referred to as “bearers of bad news” won’t likely be axed from their posts even if they are proven to be incompetent, members of the House opposition said on Wednesday.
“He keeps on saying that heads will roll and if they say they will fire these incompetent officials, I don’t think it’s going to happen. Salita lang ng salita pero walang natutuloy,” Zambales Representative Mitos Magsaysay, a vocal critic of the administration, told reporters in a news conference.
President Aquino earlier said in a speech that there are two to three Cabinet members that seem to have a habit of reporting bad news.
Deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte then said in radio interview that it was just a joke made to boost egos of Cabinet members present in the event where he delivered his speech.
Minority Leader Edcel Lagman said Aquino is only being consistent since he is used to “convict his political enemies through publicity”.
“He attempts to discipline errant members of his Cabinet by publicity. I think he is just being consistent with the wayward way of approaching things,” Lagman stressed.
Meanwhile, in reaction to presidential spokesperson Edwin Lacierda’s statement that Filipinos should get used to Aquino’s “dry humor”, Representative Magsaysay said it is the President who should learn to adjust.
“He should learn to adjust to his position as president and not us adjusting to being the kind of president he is,” she said. (Kathrina Alvarez/Sunnex)
