Format of YATS Wine Tasting

YATS Wine Cellars regularly hold non-commercial wine tasting to help wine enthusiasts expand their knowledge of wine in a most enjoyable and affordable way. These tastings are different from other commercial tastings. The wines from these tastings are not sponsored by a wine merchant and there are no salesmen. You are in the company of people from all ages and all walks with one common interest - wine.

Tickets can be purchased in advance at a discount. Each ticket comes with five tasting stubs. The wines are lined up at a wine service station. Present a ticket at this station to surrender a stub to redeem a tasting pour (roughly 50ml) of a wine of your choice.

Someone will always be available to answer questions or discuss topics pertinent to the theme of the wines in the event. Otherwise the event is a self-paced tasting exercise that is the most economical way to sample expensive and rare wines.

Hot Refreshments

Hot refreshment is served from 6 to 7:30pm. A light 3-course supper is available at separate charge by the restaurant for those who wish to enjoy a dinner after the tasting.

Theme of this event

The YATS Wine Tasting on 22nd July 2009 brings us to the Right Bank of the famed Bordeaux wine region, home to illustrious names of Chateaux like Petrus, Cheval Blanc, Ausone, Le Pin and Lafleur. Principle wine regions include St. Emilion and Pomerol although less well-known districts like Côtes de Castillon and Fronsac are emerging from the giant shadows of their famous neighbors.

Unlike their peers in Medoc and Graves on the opposite bank who are masters of Cabernet Sauvignon, Rank Bank wine makers have a deft touch with the Merlot grape and an uncanny ability to employ Cabernet Franc to give the resulting blend distinction and character.

Merlot ripens a few weeks earlier than Cabernet Sauvignon. These few weeks had helped to avert more than a few disastrous harvests. By the time bad weather set in on Bordeaux towards the latter part of September, most of the harvesting was already completed on the Right Bank so it was only the Left Bank that suffered from the downpours.

Too much of the wines from the Right Bank are drunk far too early in their life cycle. Wines of Bordeaux are made to not just improve with age but exude different personalities and charms in different phases of their lives. This tasting aims to reveal those qualities and perhaps expose some weaknesses too by tasting wines up to 50 years old.

About the Wines

The line-up usually comprises of over 15 wines. There is a different theme in every event. This makes for a comparative tasting which is an organized and focused way of savoring this experience. The lineup is usually quite large so participants have to pick and choose the wines to taste. There are enough bottles to accommodate all the tickets sold. Bottles are not replenished after they have been consumed.
