Format of YATS Wine Experience – YWE - Session

YATS Wine Cellars regularly hold non-commercial wine tasting to help wine enthusiasts expand their knowledge of wine in a most enjoyable and affordable way.  These tastings are different from other commercial tastings.  The wines from these tastings are not sponsored by a wine merchant and there are no salesmen.  You are in the company of people from all ages and all walks with one common interest – wine.

Tickets can be purchased in advance at a discount.  Each ticket comes with five tasting stubs.   The wines are lined up at a wine service station.  Present a ticket at this station to surrender the stubs to redeem a tasting pours (roughly 50-60ml per pour) of five wines on the line-up.

Someone will always be available to answer questions or discuss topics pertinent to the theme of the wines in the event.  Otherwise the event is a self-paced tasting exercise that is the most structured and economical way to sample interesting wines.

Wines of this YWE session

For this event, we take our attention slightly away from the more familiar wine varietals such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz and Merlot, to slightly less familiar but already very popular among wine enthusiasts.  We have selected five such varietals that not only exudes individual characters and interesting personalities, but also represent wines from a certain major wine-producing country or region.  These varietals are:

  • Barbera, an unsung hero and an aspiring ambassador of Italian wines, Piedmont to be more specific
  • Zinfandel, a forgotten hero which never received enough credit for awakening the North Americans – Californians in particular – into the wonderful world of wine
  • Pinot Noir, an all-time hero that means different things to different people, the promised land for connoisseurs for example, the engine under the hood of red wines from Burgundy
  • Tempranillo, an understated hero which is never one for the red carpet but really the most consistent crowd pleaser always garnering the most popularity votes, a wine that deserves more focused appreciation
  • Malbec, a national hero of Argentina, an icon, a flag if you will for wines from South America, vaulting Argentina into the wine map in one giant leap placing it at par with Chile and for that matter all other wine countries in the Southern Hemisphere

For too long, these varietals have given immense pleasures to wine lovers but have received very little in return in the form of appreciation or even attention.  They are the “convenient” distraction from the heavyweights like Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz.  Are they ready to make a mark of their own?  We think so.  In fact, we are so sure they are, we now dedicate an entire YWE (Yats Wine Experience) event to honor them and to help all of us take a hard look at what these heroes have to offer.
